Museu da Língua Portuguesa (2017-2019)

The Museu da Língua Portuguesa reopens now renovated after a major fire that destroyed it in 2015. With the updating of some installations and the creation of some new experiences, it is centered in Brazilian Portuguese. Across the country, this is the language spoken today. But this does not mean that we do not intend to account for all the linguistic aspects that contributed to forming the Brazilian national variant of Portuguese - let us speak of these languages themselves, map their paths to Brazil, mark their inflows in our speech. In the same way, we will address our internal linguistic variations - geographical, temporal and sociocultural variations.

At the Museu da Língua Portuguesa, among many other possible clippings, it was decided to observe the Portuguese language from some fundamental axes:
First axis: its antiquity. The Portuguese language and the languages that influenced the formation of Brazilian Portuguese have remote origins. To understand this is to understand how languages are in motion, born, intersected, and transformed. Otherwise, they die.
Second axis: its global presence. The Portuguese language is present on five continents. According to some authors, the idea of globalization emerge after Portugal arrived in Africa, India, Asia and America, with the navigations. Today, Portuguese is spoken, with its variants around the world, by about 261 million people.
Third axis: its syncretic formation, which differentiated us in many ways from the Lusitanian language, constituting our own verbal reality, still in progress. The Portuguese language has received contributions from many languages and is marked by the encounters and disagreements of peoples and signs, by convergences and conflicts, by contradictions and inequalities.
Fourth axis: its permanent reinvention. The Portuguese language is alive and structures our daily lives through what we speak, read and write. Oral language and written language incessantly produce and reproduce new and old meanings by recreating worlds through the arts and societies in their daily making and remaking. Miraculously, in Brazil, country-continent, it is the Portuguese language that gives unity to the country.
