Baiano, dark skinned, writer, poet, biblical and Greek scholar, lover of samba, beach and soccer, feminist avant la lettre, seductive, charismatic, interlocutor of Juscelino Kubitschek and Che Guevara, who was this man whose name was unprintable for decades?

 

Communist leader, a prisoner of the Vargas dictatorship, a member of the Constitutional Assembly of 1945, a tireless defender of the Brazilian nation and its wealth, author of the world-famous Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla, guerrilla himsel, enemy number one of the Brazilian military government, he took part in all major political events in Brazil between the 1930s and 1969.

 

On the night of November 4, 1969, he was assassinated by political police officers in an ambush in Sao Paulo. Thirty years after his death, his name is increasingly remembered as a symbol of resistance to the dictatorship in Brazil.

 

Marighella is an exhibition about Carlos Marighella assembled in São Paulo, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. Exhibiting letters and unpublished material, Marighella's own texts, archive images, varied iconography and testimonials - it was seen by a wide audience.

We structured the exhibition on five moments of the trajectory of Carlos Marighella, which were decisive moments of the Brazilian political and social history, and in which Marighella united his life to the life of the country. Thus, at the same time that the exhibition informs the public about this unknown myth, it also informs about this still unknown country. It is the man who interests us to show in his complexity; the man dialoguing with his time.
